Our Guiding Principles
At Spicebush Montessori, our principles shape every decision we make and every interaction we have. They are the foundation upon which we build a community where every child can flourish authentically.
The Heart of Our Community
These principles aren't just words on a page—they're living values that guide our daily practice. From how we prepare our environment to how we support each family, these beliefs shape our approach to nurturing young minds and building an inclusive learning community.
Our SPICES Values
Inspired by Quaker principles, these values form the foundation of everything we do at Spicebush
Social Justice
Creating a fair community where everyone's voice matters
Peace
Resolving conflicts with respect and finding harmony together
Inclusion
Welcoming and celebrating each person's unique gifts and needs
Community
Growing, learning, and supporting one another in a caring school community
Environment
Caring for our world and learning to be responsible stewards
Simplicity
Finding joy in the essential and focusing on what truly matters
Our school name "Spicebush" honors these SPICES values. Just like the native Spicebush plant provides nourishment and shelter for many creatures in our local ecosystem, we create an environment where all children grow and flourish. These principles guide our interactions with students, families, and our broader community every day.
Respect for the Child
We believe every child is a capable, curious individual deserving of deep respect. This means honoring their natural development, listening to their needs, and trusting their innate desire to learn and grow.
Individual Pace: Children progress at their own speed without pressure or comparison to others
Voice & Choice: Children have meaningful input in their learning journey and classroom community
Authentic Expression: We celebrate each child's unique personality, interests, and way of being
Inclusive Community
Neurodiversity is not just welcomed—it's celebrated as an essential part of our learning community. We intentionally create space for all types of minds and bodies to thrive.
Universal Design: Our environment and practices are designed to be accessible to all learners
Strength-Based Approach: We focus on what each child can do and build from their natural abilities
Family Collaboration: We partner closely with families to understand and support each child's needs
Authentic Montessori
We are committed to Dr. Maria Montessori's original vision of what early childhood education can be. We thoughtfully apply her methods to meet the needs of today's children and families.
Prepared Environment: Our classrooms are carefully designed with natural materials and purposeful order
Mixed-Age Community: Children ages 3-6 learn together, fostering mentorship and cooperation
Uninterrupted Work: Long work periods allow for deep concentration and meaningful learning

We foster a deep connection to the natural world, teaching children to be caretakers of their environment and understanding their place within the larger ecosystem.
Nature Integration: Outdoor exploration and nature study are central to our curriculum
Sustainable Practices: We model eco-friendly choices in our daily routines and material selection
Cosmic Education: Children explore their interconnection with all living things

Tiered Tuition: Sliding scale tuition based on family income and circumstances
Financial Transparency: Clear, upfront information about all costs and assistance available
Community Support: Fundraising and partnerships help keep education affordable for all

Family Collaboration: Families are valued partners in their child's educational journey
Professional Networks: We collaborate with specialists and therapists to support all children
Community Connections: Real-world learning experiences connect children to their broader community
Principles in Action
These principles come alive in our daily practice. From the way we greet children each morning to how we design our learning environment, every decision reflects our commitment to these values.
